Prints - Berkshire/Surrey

The prints on this page feature both the Swinley Forest and Chobham Common.

I have been walking in Swinley Forest since my teenage years; Chobham Common I came to more recently, in 2020. On the surface they are very different places: one managed by the Crown Estate for commercial timber production, the other common land with a far older, more tangled relationship to the people who use it. Yet they share something fundamental: both are simultaneously desirable and useful to humans, and ecologically vital for wildlife. It is a tension that runs through each of them like a fault line.

Both sites hold multiple SSSI and SPA designations among others and are nationally important conservation sites; but what draws me back, again and again, is something harder to classify: the experience of walking in these places, uncovering their layered histories, sitting with the question of what they mean to us now and what they might yet become.
