Workshop description

It’s often said that printmaking is where craft meets art. Come and explore the craft of carving lino to create an original artwork. I will introduce you to the basics of linocut printmaking in this exciting workshop where you’ll not only experience the thrill of peeling your own print back from a plate you have cut, but will take the next steps in linocut printmaking and add a second colour. This workshop is suitable for those with some prior experience of linocut as well as beginners. What to expect: You will be guided through the process of making a simple line drawing, transferring this to lino, cutting the design and printing it in one colour and then either cutting a second plate or recutting your existing plate to add a further colour. You’ll be shown how to ‘register’ your prints so that you can overlay the second colour confidently. We will be printing by hand burnishing and there will be one small relief press available to share. All inks, lino, a selection of papers and other equipment is provided. You will leave with several impressions of your print and your carved lino plate. What to bring: You may like to bring an idea of a subject or design with you, but there will also be some books to look through if further inspiration is needed. We will be working on approx A5 lino printing onto slightly larger paper. A folder approx A4 or slightly larger to take your prints home might be useful, paper to wrap the prints in will be provided. An apron or old shirt is very useful to protect clothes as we will be using oil-based inks. The session will be held in the studio on level 1. It will begin promptly at 10.15am and end at 4.15pm, with a 30 minute break for lunch. Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the start of the session so we can make the best use of the time. There is a café downstairs which opens at 10am providing a selection of hot and cold lunch options as well as drinks and pastries. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch to eat in the studio. This workshop is suitable for over 18’s The nearest parking is 'Brewery Road', located underneath the WWF Headquarters on Brewery Road. Postcode is: GU21 4ND.
