There are no Straight Lines in Nature
2024
Collage and stitch
Overall framed dimentions 67cm (w) x 68.5cm (h)
This is a response to the straight lines and grid patterns I see in the Swinley Forest everyday as I walk. It is a forest managed for timber so planted with rows and rows of pine trees. As the small trees grow straight lines are mown in the undergrowth, I presume to give the trees more chance of growing taller than the bracken and birch undergrowth which threatens to out compete them in the race for light.
I have taken small pieces of prints and collaged them into squares added stitch then mounted them in a grid to echo the forest planting. Every time I see the straight lines of trees I'm struck by now strange this seems... nature would never behave in this way!
Photo's show the work in progress and the finished framed piece.
Framing by Alastair Smithers Picture Framing in teal green which perfectly compliments the colours in the print.
